How to Take Afrin

How to Take Afrin (Oxymetazoline Nasal Spray)

The following steps reflect standard OTC label instructions for Afrin (oxymetazoline 0.05%):

  • Per OTC labeling, adults and children 6 years and older may use this product. Not recommended for children under 6.
  • Per OTC labeling, the recommended dose is 2–3 sprays in each nostril, no more than twice in 24 hours and no more than 3 days in a row, unless directed by a clinician.
  • Before spraying: Blow your nose to clear the nostrils.
  • Starting position: Keep your head upright (do not tilt back). Hold the bottle in the hand opposite the nostril you're treating.
  • How to spray: Insert the tip just inside the nostril, aim slightly outward toward the ear, and squeeze while gently breathing in through your nose.
  • Repeat: Follow the same steps for the other nostril, using the same number of sprays.
  • After spraying: Avoid blowing your nose for a few minutes to let the medication settle.
  • If using with other nasal products: Use saline first, wait a minute, then use Afrin last so it can work on clean passages.

How Much Does Afrin Cost

Afrin Cost With Insurance

Because Afrin is an over-the-counter nasal spray, many insurance plans do not cover it. Even with insurance, people usually pay the retail price out of pocket. Some plans with flexible spending accounts may allow reimbursement, but this varies by provider.

Prices vary by pharmacy, dose, location, and insurance plan and may have changed since this page was written. Contact your pharmacy or insurance provider for current pricing.

Afrin Cost Without Insurance

Most Afrin products are sold over the counter, so insurance typically isn't involved. Without coverage, prices are still fairly modest. Store-brand or generic oxymetazoline versions are often available at a lower price per bottle.
