How to Take Sudafed PE

 

Per OTC labeling, Sudafed PE contains phenylephrine, a nasal decongestant. Take it exactly as directed on the label and do not exceed the daily maximum.

  • Adults and children 12 years and older: Per OTC labeling, 10 mg (1 regular-strength tablet) every 4 hours as needed; do not exceed 60 mg in 24 hours.
  • Children 6–11 years: Per OTC labeling, 5 mg every 4 hours as needed; do not exceed 30 mg in 24 hours. Check product labeling to match dose to formulation strength.
  • Children 4–5 years: Per OTC labeling, 2.5 mg every 4 hours as needed; do not exceed 15 mg in 24 hours. Use a liquid formulation for accurate dosing.
  • Children under 4 years: Per OTC labeling, do not use.
  • With or without food: Per OTC labeling, may be taken with or without food.
  • Avoid taking close to bedtime if stimulating effects interfere with sleep.
  • Use only the measuring device provided with any liquid formulation to ensure accurate dosing.
  • Check all combination products: Per OTC labeling, many cold and flu products contain phenylephrine. Review all labels carefully to avoid exceeding the daily limit from multiple sources.

 

Warnings Before Taking Sudafed PE

 

  • Per OTC labeling: Do not use if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe heart disease, or narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Per OTC labeling: Ask a doctor before use if you are currently taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), stimulants, or thyroid medication.
  • Per OTC labeling: Ask a doctor before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have prostate enlargement or diabetes.
  • Per OTC labeling: Stop use and ask a doctor if symptoms do not improve within 7 days, are accompanied by fever, or if nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness occurs.
