How to Take Theraflu

 

Per OTC labeling, Theraflu powder packets are dissolved in hot water for oral use. The directions below apply to standard adult formulations (e.g., Multi-Symptom, Severe Cold, Flu & Sore Throat).

  • Adults and children 12 years and older: Per OTC labeling, mix 1 packet with 8 oz of hot (not boiling) water. Stir until fully dissolved and sip while warm.
  • How often: Per OTC labeling, take 1 packet every 4 hours as needed.
  • Maximum: Per OTC labeling, do not exceed 3 packets in 24 hours.
  • Children under 12: Per OTC labeling, Theraflu powder packets are not recommended for children under 12 years.
  • With or without food: Per OTC labeling, may be taken with or without food.
  • Check all labels: Per OTC labeling, many combination cold and flu products contain acetaminophen. Review all product labels carefully to avoid exceeding the recommended daily acetaminophen dose from multiple sources.

If your Theraflu product is a different formulation (capsules, daytime-only, or non-drowsy), follow the dosing instructions on that specific product's package label.

 

Warnings Before Taking Theraflu

 

  • Per OTC labeling: Do not use if you have severe liver disease or consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks daily, due to the acetaminophen content.
  • Per OTC labeling: Do not use with other products containing acetaminophen; check all medication labels to avoid exceeding the daily limit.
  • Per OTC labeling: Ask a doctor before use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, thyroid disease, diabetes, or prostate enlargement, due to the decongestant content.
  • Per OTC labeling: Ask a doctor before use if you are taking MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, or other prescription cold, allergy, or cough medications.
  • Per OTC labeling: Ask a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Per OTC labeling, drowsiness is a recognized adverse effect of antihistamine-containing Theraflu formulations. Per OTC labeling, avoid driving or operating machinery if affected. Alcohol may increase drowsiness.

  • Symptoms of acetaminophen overdose may include: nausea, vomiting, and delayed liver damage — acetaminophen overdose can cause serious hepatotoxicity even when initial symptoms are mild. Prompt evaluation is essential.
  • Symptoms of phenylephrine (decongestant) excess may include: elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular effects.
  • Do not take additional doses of Theraflu or any other acetaminophen-containing product until evaluated.
  • Bring the product label or know the exact dose taken when contacting Poison Control or seeking care.
