What Happens If You Miss a Dose of Testim

Missing a Dose of Testim

If you miss one dose of Testim (testosterone gel), do not panic: according to FDA-approved prescribing information for Testim, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, and do not apply a double dose to make up for it unless directed by your prescriber.

Per FDA-approved prescribing information for Testim, Testim is a topical testosterone gel containing testosterone. Missing a single day may allow a drop in blood testosterone and may cause a return of low-testosterone symptoms. What you should do depends on timing and how often doses are missed:

  • If you remember the same day (several hours before your next dose): according to FDA-approved prescribing information for Testim, apply the missed dose to clean, dry skin and continue your usual schedule.
  • If it is nearly time for your next dose: per FDA-approved prescribing information for Testim, skip the missed dose and apply the next one at the regular time. Do not apply two doses at once unless directed by your prescriber.
  • If you miss multiple days in a row: resume daily use when you are able, and contact your prescriber — persistent missed doses may lower symptom control and may require a lab check or dose adjustment.
  • Never double up: applying extra amounts may increase side-effect risk and may increase the chance of testosterone transferring to others by skin contact. Per FDA-approved prescribing information for Testim, the FDA labeling for testosterone products includes warnings about secondary exposure (especially to children and women), cardiovascular risk, and changes in mood and blood pressure. If accidental extra application or significant skin transfer occurs, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 as the primary action. Per FDA-approved prescribing information for Testim, the labeling describes secondary exposure symptoms in children and women as serious events associated with testosterone products; patients whose contacts experience any of these symptoms should contact their prescriber promptly. Whether any individual symptom warrants intervention depends on personal health factors that a clinician must assess. As secondary supportive care, the affected area may be washed with soap and water; children, pregnant women, and anyone with ingestion or significant skin exposure should contact their prescriber promptly.
  • Practical tips: set a daily alarm, keep gel where you will remember it, and wash hands after application and cover the area until dry to reduce transfer risk.
  • Special situations: if you are using Testim for gender-affirming care, fertility, or you have prostate disease or other major medical issues, contact your prescriber for specific guidance after missed doses.

Contact your prescriber if doses are missed repeatedly or if symptoms change. Do not attempt to self-adjust your dose or regimen. Contact your prescriber to discuss whether your current regimen remains appropriate.
