What Happens If You Miss a Dose of Vivelle-Dot

What Happens If You Miss a Dose of Vivelle‑Dot?

Short answer: According to FDA-approved prescribing information for Vivelle-Dot, if you forget to replace a patch, apply a new patch as soon as you remember. If it has been less than 24 hours, replace the patch and continue your usual schedule; if it has been more than 24 hours, replace the patch — you may notice a return of menopausal symptoms or spotting — and contact your prescriber if you have concerns or if symptoms change. Do not apply two patches at once unless directed by your prescriber.

Here's a clear, practical breakdown so you won't be left guessing:

  • If you remember within 24 hours: According to FDA-approved prescribing information for Vivelle-Dot, apply a new patch right away and return to your regular change day. Missing a short window may allow return of menopausal symptoms; contact your prescriber if symptoms change or doses are missed repeatedly.
  • If it has been more than 24 hours (or you missed a whole week): Per FDA-approved prescribing information for Vivelle-Dot, apply a fresh patch now and continue weekly changes from that day. You may notice a return of menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats) or breakthrough bleeding/irregular bleeding. If you have a uterus and are taking a progestin as part of your regimen, keep taking the progestin as prescribed. Contact your prescriber if bleeding is heavy or persistent, or if you have questions about your regimen.
  • If a patch falls off: Per FDA-approved prescribing information for Vivelle-Dot, if the patch is clean and has been off for less than 24 hours, reapply or replace it. If it has been off longer, apply a new patch and follow the guidance above. Medical tape may be used to secure a loose patch temporarily, but replace it at the next scheduled change.
  • If you are still menstruating or need contraception: Vivelle‑Dot is indicated for symptom relief and is not a reliable contraceptive. If pregnancy is a concern, contact your prescriber — additional contraception may be needed.
  • When to seek help: Per FDA-approved prescribing information for Vivelle-Dot, the FDA labeling describes sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, severe skin reaction at the patch site, and heavy bleeding as serious events associated with estrogen-containing products — including the boxed-warning risks of cardiovascular events, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), endometrial cancer, breast cancer, and probable dementia in women 65 and older; patients who experience any of these symptoms should contact their prescriber promptly. Whether any individual symptom warrants intervention depends on personal health factors that a clinician must assess, and published guidance from NAMS or ACOG informs how prescribers evaluate them. For any ongoing questions about missed doses, dose timing, or bleeding, your prescriber may provide tailored guidance.
